Apply for a Restaurant License
If you want to start a restaurant in Singapore you will need to apply for a license to operate. Only Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents above 21 years of age, or a registered Private Limited company can apply for the license. The company must be registered with Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority of Singapore.
Application for the license is usually through the OBLS electronic registration system. Before you register, you will need to first secure a premise for your restaurant operation. The premise has to be zoned for commercial use and the layout has to comply with the Code of Practice on Environmental Health.
You will need to obtain permit from Public Utilities Board to install grease traps for the restaurant kitchen if they have not been installed already. Not installing grease traps will have serious penalty including a S$5,000 fine.
One other key information you need to have before applying for the license is the name and personal details of at least one food handler. The food handler must have recent records of typhoid inoculation, chest x-rays for tuberculosis , and have completed the WSQ Basic Food Hygiene Course. All food handlers are required to register with NEA.
The license is valid for one year and it is maintained using the Points Demerit System. Accumulation of more than 12 points in 12 consecutive months will result in your license being revoked. Once your license has been revoked, you will not be eligible for future license application.
