Since 1958, the Singapore Standard Industrial Classification (SSIC) has set the industry standard for defining and categorizing economic activities or businesses in Singapore.
The latest SSIC adopts the basic framework and principles of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities. The SSIC is amended regularly to remain relevant to the changes in Singapore’s economy as well as changes in the ISIC.
The SSIC is applied in two ways.
On one level, the SSIC is used by Singapore’s Department of Statistics (SDoS) when conducting statistical surveys or population censuses and in administrative databases. The use of the SSIC in the research process ensures the consistency and comparability of data, thereby facilitating meaningful analysis as well as data sharing.
On another level, the SSIC is used by Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) to categorize businesses. As a business owner, you must provide an SSIC code when registering a Singapore company.
